eleanor roosevelt
“I can’t kiss you so I kiss your picture good night & good morning!”
—e.r. to l.h., in a letter dated 9 march 1933

eleanor roosevelt (1884-1962), first lady from 1933 to 1945 as wife to franklin delano roosevelt, was well known as a political figure and activist. less well known, however, is her relationship with lorena “hick” hickok (1893–1968). eleanor and hick first met in 1928, when hick, working as an associated press reporter, was assigned to interview eleanor. the two fell in love, so hick resigned from the associated press and effectively moved into the white house. the press at the time referred to the two as the first lady and the first friend. eleanor and hick wrote feverishly to each other for the next three decades. hick wrote to eleanor “I want to put my arms around you and kiss you at the corner of your mouth” (5 december 1933). eleanor wore a sapphire ring hick gave her to the 1933 presidential inauguration. of the ring, eleanor wrote to hick, “ I want to put my arms around you, I ache to hold you close. Your ring is a great comfort, I look at it and think she does love me, or I wouldn’t be wearing it!”
about the song
amelia and eleanor in 1935, photo from national air and space museum
eleanor also had a close relationship with amelia earhart (1897-1937?) in the 1930s. eleanor had always been interested in learning how to fly a plane, but her husband thought it was too unsafe for a first lady. though no letters exist suggesting the two had a romantic relationship, in 1933 the two left a presidential dinner and flew from d.c. to baltimore in their evening gowns. rumor has it, amelia even let eleanor touch the controls.
that’s the queerest date I’ve ever heard of!
so I wrote this song, imagining what would it would be like for the two women to take a joyride in amelia’s canary yellow airplane, taking off from the national mall, and maybe steal away to somewhere they could both be together.
sunday finest
I’ve always wanted to fly but he said it’s safer inside
I’ve always wanted to find someone
kiss me at the corner of my mouth
later we can talk about heading south
for the winter but for now
meet me in the Mall moonlight
I hope you’ll wear your sunday finest
hand on the throttle and one on your thigh
we’ll climb to unspoken heights
I’ve never been a girl to remain even in an attractive cage
and you always manage to stay so serious
but maybe once this dinner is over
and our husbands have retired to their beds
after midnight let’s catch the wind
meet me in the Mall moonlight
you know I’ll wear my sunday finest
hand on the throttle and one on your thigh
we’ll climb to unspoken heights
what if we made our escape
and we wouldn't have to wait
for the second wave
we’ll take off in the Mall moonlight
we will wear our sunday finest
hand on the throttle and one on your thigh
we’re climbing to unspoken heights
all night, all night, all night, we’ll fly
